Ula
Sickle

touch-skin, colour-muscle, fold-bone

As an integral part of the exhibition touch, colour and fold, Goda Budvytytė invited choreographer and performer Ula Sickle to propose a series of guided sessions within the exhibition space. Inspired by a somatic approach to movement, as well as hypnosis techniques, Sickle lead three different guided sessions that focuses on the senses beyond the primacy of sight, which graphic design is primarily concerned with, and reconnects the act of perception to the whole body.

Drawing a parallel with the exhibition’s themes of touch, colour perception and folding, Sickle focused on three different “systems” of the body: the skin, the muscles, and the bones. Making a link between the physicality of the book and the body, the guided sessions explored tactility, the effect of colour on muscular tissue, the folding of paper as the folding of the body and the limbs. Participants were guided beyond the pre-eminent position of the visual into real and imagined spaces, in order to experience a more embodied process of perception.

Guided by her live amplified voice and set to ambient music, for the session Ula collaborated with Ukranian musician Sasha Zakrevska (Poly Chain). Each sessions finished with a series of practical exercises performed in pairs. The sessions also included an open reading and interpretation of the contributions by photographer Rasa Juškevičiūtė and writer Bernardo José de Souza, entangling their different practices and visions with her own.

'touch-skin, colour-muscle, fold-bone' was created for Goda Budvytyté's solo exhibition at MACRO - Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome with the workshop/performances taking place on the 25-26.02, 25-26.03 & 12-13.05, 2023
